Latifa: a Sufi prayer for reconnecting with the essence of being

Latifa: a Sufi prayer for reconnecting with the essence of being

In the Sufi tradition, some spiritual practices have survived the centuries with astonishing simplicity. Among them is the Latifa, an ancient Sufi prayer that invites us to return to what's essential: the encounter with our innermost being.

Transmitted in various Sufi spiritual paths, Latifa is a simple yet powerful meditative practice used to awaken inner awareness and reconnect the heart to its spiritual dimension.

In today's often turbulent and fragmented world, this Sufi practice offers an accessible path to presence, inner listening and harmony.

What is Latifa in the Sufi tradition?

Latifa is a meditative prayer stemming from the Sufi tradition, the spiritual and mystical dimension of Islam.

It is part of a vision of the body and soul in which the human being possesses several subtle centres of perception, known in Arabic as lata'if (singular: latifa). These centres correspond to different qualities of inner awareness.

In certain practices Sufi, Latifa gradually awakens these deeper dimensions of our being through :

This union between body, heart and conscience transforms prayer into a real meditation incarnate.

A Sufi prayer in seven steps

Latifa is generally performed in seven short phrases, each corresponding to an inner movement.

These phrases can be spoken slowly, resting the hand on different parts of the body, to anchor attention in the inner experience.

The seven traditional stages are :

  1. I exist

  2. I wish to

  3. I hope that

  4. I trust

  5. I release

  6. I like

  7. I'm ready to go

These simple words become a spiritual path.

They invite us to recognise our existence, to welcome our aspirations, to open our hearts to trust and to allow love to emerge as a fundamental quality of our being.

In the Sufi tradition, these stages are not just affirmations. They are gateways to inner transformation.

Sufi meditation accessible to all

Latifa has a rare quality: its simplicity.

Unlike some complex spiritual practices, it does not require lengthy study or special conditions. It only takes a few minutes to stop, breathe and listen to what's going on inside.

Practised regularly, the Latifa can become a moment of refocusing, a space where you can rediscover :

In Sufism, Spiritual transformation often begins with these simple gestures, repeated with sincerity.

Sufi wisdom: getting back to basics

The Sufi path teaches that true knowledge is not to be found in books or discourses alone. It is revealed in inner experience.

Latifa acts as a reminder:

Beyond our daily concerns, there is a space of calm and clarity within each of us.

By simply placing our hand on our heart and saying these words with presence, we take a step towards this space.

Perhaps the spiritual path begins right here.

In a moment of breath.

In a simple gesture.

In a heart that remembers its depth.
