6 tips for following the spiritual path of Sufi ecstatic dance

Becoming a whirling dervish involves a serious commitment to the path of Sufism and training within a Sufi order, such as the Mevlevi order. Here are some general steps to becoming a whirling dervish:

1. Studying Sufism :

Start by deepening your knowledge of Sufism by studying its teachings, practices and philosophical principles. Read books, attend conferences and seek out reliable resources to help you better understand the Sufi tradition.

2. Find a Sufi teacher :

It is important to find a qualified and respected Sufi teacher who can guide you on the Sufi path. Seek out reputable Sufi teachers or masters, and consider visiting spiritual centres where you may have the opportunity to meet a Sufi teacher.

3. Practising spirituality :

Engage in regular spiritual practice, including prayer, meditation and dhikr (recitation of divine names). Follow the teachings of your Sufi teacher to cultivate a deep and sincere spiritual life.

4. Take part in Sufi retreats and circles:

Get involved in retreats, study circles and community practices with other Sufi seekers. These gatherings will give you the opportunity to deepen your understanding of Sufism and share experiences with other aspirants.

5. Learning to dance :

Whirling dance is a central practice of whirling dervishes. If you wish to become a whirling dervish, you will need to learn the specific movements, gestures and techniques of the dance. This generally requires training with a qualified Sufi master in the Mevlevi order or another Sufi order that practises this sacred dance.

6. Commitment to the Sufi path :

The path of Sufism requires a deep and sincere commitment. Be prepared to devote time, energy and commitment to developing your spiritual practice and your understanding of Sufism. Be prepared also to engage in practices of humility, service and love for others.

It is important to note that becoming a whirling dervish requires specific training and transmission of teachings by a recognised Sufi master. It is advisable to seek advice and guidance from qualified Sufi teachers in order to follow the path of the whirling dervish authentically and appropriately.
