sufi dance

Rana Gorgani answers all your questions about Sufi dance in 10 points and gives us 4 good reasons to practice this dance.

dance of being

This dance is a spiritual practice, which bears the name of Sama (or Sema) meaning “spiritual hearing” in connection with
Sufism
.

This rotating dance is also known as the “Whirling Dervishes”.

The dance of the whirling dervishes  corresponds to a precise current, that of the
Sufis Mevlevis
.

Rana Gorgani does not seek to replicate the highly codified and choreographed dance of Turkey's  whirling dervishceremonies.

It is based on the essence of communion with the Cosmos and with the divine interior. It is in no way a reproduction of a mystical current.

It is a space of total freedom, a search for fulfillment, a personal and intimate experience through the technique of roundabouts.

The dancer rotates as the earth revolves around the sun, he is then in osmosis with the universe following the rotation of the movement of the planets, he turns on the left side, on the side of the heart.

The answer to this question is found in the Sama or “spiritual hearing” and only the one who turns has the answer.
To know the mysteries and secrets of this dance, you have to want to try the experience yourself, like a journey that cannot be lived without a departure…

The feeling of vertigo is natural. It is an essential element in learning Sufi dance because by this feeling of vertigo or nausea the dancer prepares his body for the state of ecstasy, called mystical intoxication. These sensations can be more or less strong from one person to another.

Perseverance and surpassing oneself are part of the steps to try to reach this spiritual path where the mind and body surrender for a liberation of the soul.

Over time, the dancer acquires control of his body and the feeling of dizziness or nausea disappears to give way to a feeling of fullness.

The long skirt, most often white, symbol of purity, allows to highlight the circular movement of the dancer, it opens in the circular movement.

Sufi dance is the dance of souls and reveals spiritual energy. This energy cannot be seen with the naked eye because it is elusive and its color is none other than a colorless, pure and transparent light like a mirror through which the world is reflected.

This is why the movements of infinite waves of the skirt reveal the presence of the soul which, like an aura, envelops the body and floods it like the sun that offers its light to the earth, source of life without which we could not exist.

Sufi music is repetitive, often built around Zekr (or Zikr) refers to both the memory and the practice that revives that memory. The rhythms are reminiscent of the heartbeat and the musical loops lead to Sama and mystical intoxication.

Yes, you have to be a believer. You have to believe in love.

Love of oneself and others. Believe in ourselves above all and accept to follow this path, sometimes strewn with pitfalls, disappointment, discouragement but also dreams fulfilled and hope.

The rest is irrelevant, because through this dance I offer the possibility to the one who looks at me to see himself as the reflection of a mirror… I am me and one at a time. It is a listening between oneself and others…

It is not necessary to have already practiced dance. Everyone can learn and master the techniques of the tour while respecting their own rhythm and dispositions. With time and practice the dancer improves the power and speed of his tricks, he pushes his own limits…

No age limit.

Sufi dance is an instinctive dance. Moreover, we can notice that often children start to turn spontaneously and take pleasure in this feeling of vertigo.

Unfortunately as we grow we lose this spontaneity and momentum. This is why this dance, like a quest, brings us back to the sensations of being that have been denied over the years and the life course of each human being.
