Sarabande Soufie – Keyvan Chemirani & The Modal Experience Ensemble | With Rana Gorgani
« A summit meeting of Eastern and Baroque traditions. »
ResMusica
At the heart of this performance, the fiery verses of Jalal al-Din Rumi, the 13th-century Sufi poet, meet the committed writing of Forough Farrokhzad, a major figure of contemporary Iranian poetry. Two sensibilities, two eras, yet one shared celebration of desire, love and transcendence.
“May the Sufis’ saraband lead us to contemplation, to dreams, to rapture and to joy!”
Two voices of Persian poetry
Jalâl ad-Dîn Rûmî
13th-century Sufi poet
Forough Farrokhzad
Contemporary Iranian poet
Drawing on the poetry of one of the greatest Persian Sufi poets is a wonderful source of inspiration, both in substance, a true ode to freedom and love, and in form, with its immense metrical richness. Setting the poetry of the great masters alongside the great contemporary Persian poet Forough gives us the chance to grasp the depth and strength of Persian culture today, and to discover the extraordinary prosodic craft that the mystic poets of the 12th and 13th centuries devoted themselves to.
The dance of the sama
It felt important to include the dance of the sama, this “meditation in motion”, as the wonderful Rana Gorgani calls it. In the sama, the whirling dervish dance created by Rumi and his son, the dancer turns on their own axis, enters a trance and reaches a new state of consciousness.
